🏛️ About Government House, Hobart
Perched high on the Queens Domain overlooking the River Derwent, Government House, Hobart is one of Australia’s most impressive vice-regal residences and the official home of the Governor of Tasmania.
Built between 1855 and 1857, the mansion was designed by colonial architect William Porden Kay in grand Victorian Gothic Revival style and constructed from sandstone quarried on site. The former quarry pits were later transformed into ornamental pools within the gardens.
Today, Government House and its 15 hectares of landscaped gardens are often opened to the public for community events, concerts, and open-garden days — a tradition that continues the Governor’s commitment to making this remarkable property accessible to all Tasmanians.
Visitors are welcomed into an atmosphere of history and tranquillity, surrounded by heritage gardens, sweeping lawns, and breathtaking views of the Derwent River. It’s the perfect backdrop for an elegant Friday picnic with Flourish. 🌿
