🚌 The Experience

🐟 Salmon Ponds – A step back in time

Our first stop is the iconic Salmon Ponds, nestled along the Plenty River just outside New Norfolk.

Established in 1861, this historic site is the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere and the birthplace of trout fishing in Australia.

Wander through the beautiful English-style gardens, lined with trees over 100 years old, explore the heritage buildings, and watch the trout in the ponds — from tiny fingerlings to impressive full-grown fish.

You’ll also have the chance to feed the fish (always a highlight - bring a $2 coin!) and enjoy a relaxed start to the day surrounded by nature.

🛍️ New Norfolk – Browse, wander & discover

We then head into the heart of New Norfolk — a riverside town full of character and history.

Established in 1807, it’s one of Tasmania’s oldest settlements and is now known as the antiques capital of Tasmania, with a collection of unique shops, galleries and hidden gems waiting to be explored.

We begin with a visit to the “Open the Door” Exhibition located in the Ladies Cottage at Willow Court. This powerful, site-specific exhibition is a collaboration between artist Brigita Ozolins and musician Dean Stevenson, inspired by the long history of women who were psychiatric patients at Willow Court.

OPEN THE DOOR reflects on a confronting reality — that admission to the Cottage required just two signatures, yet release required eight. It explores the challenges this created, while also highlighting the strength and resilience of the women who lived there.

Despite the hardships they faced, many were far from powerless — drawing on inner strength to “open the door” to life beyond Willow Court.

Following our visit, there will be time to enjoy the lighter side of New Norfolk…

Browse the many local shops, op shops and antiques, discover hidden gems, or simply grab a coffee and soak up the charm of this historic riverside town before we head to lunch.

🍽️ Lunch at The Bush Inn – A true Tasmanian icon

We finish the day with a relaxed lunch at the Bush Inn, one of Australia’s oldest continuously operating pubs.

Dating back to the early 1800s, this historic venue has played a significant role in the development of New Norfolk and remains a much-loved local favourite. Enjoy a classic country pub meal (at your own cost), soak up the atmosphere, and share stories and laughs with your fellow Flourish ladies.
